WASHINGTON — Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to “permanently pause migration from all third-world countries” a day after two National Guard members were shot near the White House in Washington, D.C. The shooting, carried out by an Afghan national, left one soldier dead and another critically injured.

In a late-night social media post on Thursday, Trump stated his administration would “end all federal benefits and subsidies to noncitizens” and remove anyone deemed “not a net asset to the United States.” He linked the decision to national security concerns, claiming that controlling immigration is America’s top priority.

The move follows earlier actions to revoke temporary protected status for nationals from countries including Afghanistan, Venezuela, Haiti, and Somalia. U.S. authorities are reviewing asylum cases and green card approvals under Biden-era policies, with a focus on “countries of concern,” referencing a travel ban on 19 nations imposed by Trump in 2017.

Trump’s announcement marks a further escalation of anti-migrant policies, amid ongoing debates over legality and implementation. National Guard troops remain deployed in Washington, D.C., supporting law enforcement as authorities continue investigating the attack, assess risks, and implement new immigration and security measures to prevent future incidents.
