Washington – US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will dispatch a hospital ship to Greenland to provide medical care to residents lacking adequate health services.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said the initiative is being coordinated with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, whom he appointed special representative for Greenland. He stated the vessel would deliver treatment and support to people on the island who are “sick and not being taken care of,” adding the ship is already on its way.
Governor Landry welcomed the announcement, thanking Trump on social media platform X and expressing pride in collaborating on what he described as an important humanitarian effort.
The move comes amid renewed US attention toward Greenland’s strategic significance. In recent months, Trump has reiterated interest in expanding US influence over the Arctic island, citing national security concerns linked to Russia and China. He earlier warned of possible sanctions against European countries opposing US ambitions regarding Greenland.
However, after talks with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump softened his stance, saying discussions had established a framework for potential cooperation involving the United States, Denmark, and Greenland on broader Arctic issues.
Trump also indicated further dialogue would address the proposed US “Golden Dome” missile defense system and its relevance to Greenland’s strategic location.
