Donald Trump has suggested the possibility of “finishing off” what he described as the remaining elements of the Iranian state while urging countries dependent on the Strait of Hormuz to take responsibility for ensuring the security of the vital waterway.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, the US president criticized what he termed “non-responsive allies” and questioned why the United States should continue bearing the burden of safeguarding the strategic passage.
Trump’s remarks came amid escalating regional tensions following a joint military offensive launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28. Reports indicate that around 1,300 people have been killed in the conflict, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Tehran has responded with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and locations in Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf states. Iranian officials say the strikes are aimed at US military installations and allied infrastructure in the region.
The growing conflict has also disrupted global markets and international aviation. Since March 1, Iran has effectively closed the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments.
Trump has urged US partners, including China and other nations relying heavily on the strait for energy supplies, to play a more active role in reopening the waterway and maintaining stability in the region.
The situation continues to raise international concern as diplomatic efforts intensify to prevent further escalation.
