Washington, April 4, 2025 – In a dramatic move, President Donald Trump has fired General Timothy Haugh, the head of the National Security Agency (NSA) and U.S. Cyber Command, following what appears to be a wider purge of top security officials. The dismissal, first reported by CBS, has raised concerns among Democrats about national security risks.
The reason for Haugh’s removal remains unclear, but it comes after a meeting between Trump and far-right activist Laura Loomer. Loomer reportedly urged the president to fire officials she believed were disloyal to his agenda. Trump denied any direct role by Loomer in the firings, stating that anyone deemed disloyal would be dismissed.
The shake-up has sparked alarm in the political arena. Representative Jim Himes and Senator Mark Warner, both leaders on intelligence committees, expressed concern over the decision, with Himes lamenting that Haugh’s commitment to national security and the law might have led to his firing.
The firings also follow controversy surrounding the NSA and White House National Security Council (NSC), especially after an incident where a journalist was inadvertently added to a Signal messaging thread about military strikes in Yemen. Trump has stood by officials involved in the leak, but the incident reportedly opened the door to further scrutiny of staff members not fully aligned with the president.
Trump praised Loomer as a “great patriot” and confirmed meeting with her. Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is under review for his involvement in the Signal leak. While the firings continue to raise questions, investigations into the matter are ongoing, with no immediate external inquiries confirmed.
