U.S. President Donald Trump reignited tensions with billionaire Elon Musk on Tuesday, suggesting he would “have to take a look” at the possibility of deporting the Tesla and SpaceX CEO. The remark came in response to Musk’s renewed criticism of a Republican-led tax and spending bill.
“I don’t know. We’ll have to take a look,” Trump said when asked about Musk’s immigration status. He also hinted that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) might investigate federal subsidies granted to Musk’s companies. “We might have to put DOGE on Elon. DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon,” Trump quipped.
The feud has escalated after Musk publicly opposed the tax bill and floated the idea of forming a new political party, warning it would be a response to the current system’s failure to represent the majority of Americans. In a poll on X, Musk asked if it was time to form a centrist “America Party,” echoing his previous efforts through the “America PAC,” which spent nearly $240 million backing Trump and other GOP candidates in the 2024 elections.
Trump claimed Musk was “very upset” over losing government support for electric vehicles and warned he “could lose a lot more than that.”
Once considered allies, Musk and Trump’s relationship has soured since late May, when Musk began voicing strong opposition to GOP-backed fiscal policies. Musk’s companies Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and others have long benefited from federal contracts and tax credits, which may now be under scrutiny.
The clash underscores growing fractures within the Republican Party and signals potential realignment in conservative tech and political circles.
