Washington, D.C., September 26 — Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday lauded U.S. President Donald Trump for his role in securing a ceasefire between Pakistan and India, calling it a step that averted a “major catastrophe” in South Asia.
Sharif, accompanied by Pakistan’s Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, held a closed-door meeting with Trump in the Oval Office. According to Islamabad’s statement, the discussion was “warm and cordial,” focusing on regional stability, economic ties, and counterterrorism cooperation.
The prime minister described Trump as a “man of peace,” praising his mediation efforts in South Asia and the Middle East. He particularly commended Trump’s initiative to host Muslim leaders in New York earlier this week to discuss restoring peace in Gaza and the West Bank.
Sharif expressed gratitude for the revised tariff arrangements agreed earlier this year and invited American firms to invest in Pakistan’s agriculture, IT, mining, and energy sectors. He emphasized Islamabad’s commitment to strengthening economic and security cooperation with Washington.
Trump, speaking ahead of the talks, referred to Sharif and Munir as “great leaders,” calling Pakistan’s army chief a “great guy.” U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio also joined the meeting.
Sharif welcomed Trump’s public support for Pakistan’s counterterrorism role and invited the U.S. president to make an official visit to Pakistan at his convenience.
