US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem to head the Department of Homeland Security, according to a CNN report. Noem, currently in her second term as governor, gained national attention for her resistance to imposing a statewide mask mandate during the COVID-19 pandemic, which endeared her to many in the Republican Party. However, her political journey faced challenges this year, notably after controversy sparked from a memoir where she described shooting a dog on her family farm. This incident led to speculation that her standing with Trump had waned.
Despite the backlash, Noem’s political influence remains strong, and her appointment signals Trump’s intention to rely on trusted figures within the GOP for key positions. The Department of Homeland Security, responsible for matters like immigration, border security, and disaster response, will be tasked with navigating complex challenges in the coming administration. Trump’s selection of Noem comes as he also names Tom Homan as the new “border czar,” focusing on stricter immigration enforcement.
Additionally, reports indicate that Trump is eyeing US Senator Marco Rubio for the role of Secretary of State, further shaping his foreign policy team. The appointment of Noem highlights Trump’s efforts to consolidate control over vital security and immigration matters as he builds his administration.
