Washington, Aug. 17 – US President Donald Trump is seeking to host a trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on August 22, according to a report published by Axios on Saturday.
The proposal follows Trump’s high-profile summit with Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday. The meeting marked the first face-to-face engagement between the two leaders since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and the first time Putin has set foot on US soil for talks with an American president since 2007.
Trump is set to meet Zelenskyy at the White House on Monday and has also invited European leaders to attend. According to officials familiar with the discussions, the US president emphasized to European counterparts in a phone call that he aims to bring Putin and Zelenskyy to the same table as soon as possible.
While Zelenskyy has confirmed his Washington visit, the Kremlin has not yet publicly announced Putin’s participation in the proposed trilateral summit.
At a press conference after the Alaska talks, Putin said the two sides had reached an “understanding,” without elaborating further. Trump described the discussions as making “some headway” but acknowledged that no agreement had been reached to end the ongoing war.
Diplomatic observers note that if the trilateral summit takes place, it could represent the most direct attempt yet by the US administration to broker peace between Moscow and Kyiv, while also testing the willingness of both sides to engage in dialogue under American mediation.
