WASHINGTON, Jan 6 – President-elect Donald Trump has urged Congress to swiftly pass his agenda, including tax cuts, tighter border security, and increased fossil fuel production. Speaking on the Hugh Hewitt radio program, Trump said, “I prefer one bill, but I’m open to two, as long as it gets passed quickly.”
Trump suggested funding his priorities—potentially costing trillions—through tariffs on imports. “Republicans must unite and deliver historic victories. Send the bill to my desk as soon as possible,” he wrote on social media.
Republican lawmakers are debating whether to combine border security and tax legislation into a single bill or pass them separately. A single package could expedite progress but risks alienating some Republicans, especially those from high-tax states seeking adjustments to the 2017 tax cuts.
Trump also called for eliminating taxes on tipped income, further complicating the legislative cost. He hinted at reallocating funds from other areas to begin border work early and expressed willingness to discuss Dreamers separately, stating, “It’s been a long time.”
With slim majorities in both chambers, Republicans plan to use budget reconciliation to bypass Democrats, allowing them to pass bills with simple majorities. However, this strategy limits what can be included, leaving Republicans a tightrope to walk to fulfill Trump’s campaign promises.
