WASHINGTON, June 26 – Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Israel to cancel the ongoing corruption trial of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or grant him a pardon, calling the legal process a “travesty of justice.”
In a Truth Social post, Trump described Netanyahu as a “great hero” and “warrior” who had done “so much for Israel,” saying the trial should be “cancelled immediately.” He compared the proceedings to the investigations he faced in the U.S., calling them both “witch hunts.”
The Israeli prime minister, on trial since 2020 for bribery, fraud, and breach of trust which he denies thanked Trump for his “moving support” and “tremendous backing” of Israel.
Trump’s comments come just days after he condemned Israel’s retaliatory strikes on Iran, which followed a ceasefire agreement he claimed to have brokered. Netanyahu, however, praised Trump’s bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities as a “bold and decisive” action.
Trump further claimed the U.S. had “saved Israel” during its conflict with Iran and now intended to “save Netanyahu.” He emphasized his long-standing alliance with Netanyahu, saying: “There is no one who worked in better harmony with me.”
The remarks sparked backlash from Israel’s opposition leader Yair Lapid, who said Trump should not interfere in the legal affairs of a sovereign nation. Lapid speculated that Trump’s statement might be an attempt to pressure Netanyahu into making concessions in Gaza in exchange for support.
Netanyahu’s trial has been delayed repeatedly, with many alleging that the prolonged war in Gaza is being used to stall legal proceedings and avoid elections amid public discontent.
