US President Donald Trump has called on NATO allies to send naval ships to the Strait of Hormuz, urging member countries to take a more active role in securing the vital oil shipping lane amid rising regional tensions.
Speaking in an interview, Trump criticized the alliance for what he described as a lack of action, saying member countries should “get guts” and deploy ships to the strategic waterway to help restore maritime security and ensure the flow of global oil supplies.
Trump said the Strait of Hormuz is critical for global energy transportation and argued that countries benefiting from oil shipments through the route should contribute more to protecting it. He also expressed frustration with the alliance, saying the United States should not be expected to handle the situation alone.
The US president further questioned NATO’s reliability, stating that if the United States ever needed full support, the alliance might not respond as expected. His remarks add to ongoing tensions between Washington and NATO members over burden-sharing and military commitments.
Meanwhile, Trump is expected to meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Washington next week to discuss alliance cooperation, security issues, and the situation in the Middle East.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, with millions of barrels of oil passing through it daily.
