U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that the United States could target Iran’s critical energy and water infrastructure if ongoing negotiations fail to produce an agreement. The warning came as diplomatic efforts continue through indirect channels to reduce tensions between the United States and Iran following weeks of military escalation.
President Trump stated that negotiations were progressing and expressed optimism that a deal could be reached soon. However, he cautioned that if an agreement is not finalized and the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened for business, the United States could launch strikes targeting Iran’s electric power plants, oil wells, export terminals including Kharg Island, and desalination facilities.
Iranian authorities responded by saying there have been no direct negotiations with the United States, adding that recent communications were conducted through intermediaries. Several regional countries, including Pakistan, Türkiye, and Egypt, have reportedly been involved in mediation efforts to facilitate dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
The tensions follow ongoing military confrontations and airstrikes that began earlier this year, resulting in significant casualties and damage to infrastructure. Iran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and other locations in the region, impacting regional security, global markets, and international aviation routes.
Diplomatic efforts are continuing as international mediators work to prevent further escalation and reach a negotiated settlement.
