US President Donald Trump has warned Russian President Vladimir Putin of “very severe consequences” if he refuses to agree to end the war in Ukraine during their upcoming meeting in Alaska.
Speaking to reporters at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Trump was asked if Moscow would face repercussions should Putin reject calls to halt the conflict. “Yes, they will,” he replied, stressing that Russia would face “very serious consequences.”
The remarks followed a virtual conference between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and senior European leaders earlier in the day. Trump described the talks as “very good,” rating the meeting “a 10… very, very friendly.”
The Alaska summit, to be held in Anchorage, will be the first direct meeting between Trump and Putin in Trump’s second term. Trump suggested the talks could lead to a second, trilateral meeting involving himself, Putin, and Zelenskyy.
“There’s a very good chance we’ll have a second meeting, which could be more productive than the first,” Trump said. “The first is to find out where we stand. If it goes well, I’d like to hold the next one almost immediately.”
However, Trump cautioned that a follow-up is not guaranteed. “There may be no second meeting if I feel it’s not appropriate because I didn’t get the answers we need,” he said.
Trump added that Friday’s talks could produce “certain great things” but are mainly intended to “set the table” for a potential trilateral.
The meeting in Anchorage is expected to focus on de-escalation efforts in Ukraine, with Washington and its European allies urging Moscow to commit to ending hostilities.
