WASHINGTON, July 15 – U.S. President Donald Trump expressed growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, voicing disappointment amid ongoing efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
“I’m disappointed in him, but I’m not done with him,” Trump told the BBC in a televised interview, signaling dissatisfaction while leaving room for further diplomacy.
Earlier in the day, Trump warned of imposing “very severe tariffs” on Russia if a ceasefire is not reached within 50 days. The warning came during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House.
Following the comments, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick clarified that Trump was referring to economic sanctions rather than traditional tariffs. According to The Washington Times, the president intended to apply “secondary sanctions” targeting sectors that support Russia’s war efforts.
Trump also confirmed plans to send weapons to Ukraine through NATO, including advanced Patriot missile systems, with deliveries expected to begin shortly.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later posted on social media, thanking Trump for his “willingness to support Ukraine” and praising the strength of their bilateral ties.
Despite repeatedly stating he maintains a working relationship with Putin, Trump has openly criticized the Russian leader over the lack of progress. Earlier this month, following a phone call with Putin, Trump told reporters, “I didn’t make any progress with him today at all. I’m not happy about that.”
Trump has promised to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours if reelected. While he continues to engage diplomatically, recent developments suggest a tougher stance as efforts to secure a ceasefire remain stalled.
