Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday to discuss ongoing efforts for peace in Ukraine and broader regional issues, diplomatic sources confirmed.
The phone conversation focused on the latest developments in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, particularly the outcomes of Monday’s peace talks held in Istanbul. This marked the second round of negotiations, following an initial meeting on May 16.
During the latest session, both sides agreed to a humanitarian exchange involving more prisoners of war, prioritizing the youngest and most critically injured. Additionally, they reached a consensus on the return of the remains of 6,000 fallen soldiers from each side a significant step in addressing wartime humanitarian concerns.
Fidan and Rubio also exchanged views on unfolding situations in Syria and Gaza, reaffirming the importance of coordination on regional stability and humanitarian relief.
The ongoing diplomatic engagements underscore Ankara’s active role in fostering dialogue and mediation amid global and regional conflicts.
