New York, September 24 (AA) – Türkiye has raised the share of renewable energy in its total installed capacity to more than 60 percent, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced during his address at the UN Climate Summit in New York.
“While increasing renewable energy and improving energy efficiency, we are expanding low-carbon technologies in industry,” Erdogan said. “As of this year, the share of renewables in our installed capacity has exceeded 60 percent.”
The president stressed that Türkiye remains committed to its net zero emissions target for 2053, with ongoing transformation across major sectors. He underlined advances in electric vehicle production, modern railway systems, and clean energy infrastructure as key milestones of this transition.
Erdogan also outlined initiatives designed to support the green transition. These include the launch of a national emissions trading system, the adoption of a green finance strategy, and the development of a national green taxonomy. Türkiye’s climate roadmap, he explained, rests on seven pillars: energy, industry, buildings, transportation, waste, agriculture, and forestry.
Through these measures, Türkiye aims to reduce emissions by 466 million tons by 2035, lowering total emissions to 643 million tons. Erdogan reaffirmed Türkiye’s desire to host the COP31 summit in 2026, presenting it as an opportunity to contribute further to global climate action.
Following his speech, Erdogan met journalists at the Turkish House (Türkevi). He said his meetings in New York had been positive and confirmed that after concluding talks with Vietnam’s leader, he would travel to Washington for a detailed meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Asked about expectations from the upcoming talks, Erdogan replied: “Let’s meet first. Afterward, we will share what we discussed and what results we achieved.”
