Türkiye has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for a three-year term starting January 1, 2026.
ECOSOC is the UN’s central platform for discussing international economic, social, and environmental issues and formulating policy recommendations. Türkiye secured 174 votes under the Western European and Other States group, joining Australia, Finland, and Norway from the same bloc.
In a statement on X, Türkiye’s UN envoy Ahmet Yildiz expressed gratitude to member states for their confidence, affirming Türkiye’s readiness to contribute actively to global development goals. “We look forward to working together to advance the global development agenda,” he said.
A total of 18 countries were elected, including four from Africa, four from the Asia-Pacific, three from Eastern Europe, and three from Latin America and the Caribbean.
The newly elected members will officially assume their roles on January 1, 2026. Türkiye’s inclusion reflects its growing role in international diplomacy and its commitment to multilateral cooperation within the UN framework.
