Istanbul, Dec. 21 – Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Saturday that ongoing violations by Israel are making efforts to advance a peace plan in the Gaza Strip “incredibly more difficult,” following high-level talks in the United States involving officials from Egypt and Qatar.
The US, Türkiye, Egypt, and Qatar held discussions on Friday in Miami to address the situation in Gaza. Representing Türkiye, Fidan spoke to reporters after the meeting, highlighting the significance of the talks, which focused on the next phase of the Gaza Peace Plan launched at the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit.
“Now, since the first phase has been completed following the release of the last hostage, the parameters for moving to the second phase are being discussed,” Fidan said. He described the meeting as promising, noting that participants discussed challenges encountered during the first phase. “Especially as Türkiye, we clearly stated that ceasefire violations by Israel are endangering the peace plan and creating major risks for transitioning to the second phase. The ongoing violations are making the process incredibly more difficult,” he said.
Fidan underlined that reconstruction plans were also reviewed. Türkiye stressed three key principles: Gaza must be governed by Gazans, must remain territorially unified, and all initiatives must benefit the local population. Discussions included possible timelines for transferring Gaza’s administration to a technocratic committee, establishing a Peace Council, and forming an International Stability Force.
He highlighted the importance of humanitarian aid, noting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s sensitivity to the issue. Fidan also referenced Türkiye’s experience in post-earthquake reconstruction, completing about 500,000 homes within three years, suggesting such expertise could support Gaza’s rebuilding efforts.
Fidan called Friday’s meeting “the most important at the highest level since Sharm el-Sheikh,” emphasizing the shared commitment of all parties to advance a stable and unified Gaza.
