WARSAW, July 9, 2025 – Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk affirmed on Tuesday that his government maintains a “stable majority” despite growing tensions within the ruling coalition following last month’s presidential election defeat.
In a post on X, Tusk said coalition talks had concluded with a shared commitment to move forward. “Maintaining the coalition is difficult but possible,” he stated, emphasizing the need for courage and loyalty. He announced that a Cabinet reshuffle would be presented by July 15 to re-energize the government.
Tusk’s Civic Coalition (KO) governs alongside Poland 2050, the Third Way, and the Left, collectively holding a 54% parliamentary majority. However, cracks have widened since KO candidate Rafal Trzaskowski lost the June 1 presidential runoff to the incumbent backed by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party.
Internal criticism has intensified, with some KO members accusing Poland 2050 leader and Lower House Speaker Szymon Holownia of drawing support away from Trzaskowski. Holownia added to speculation after an unannounced meeting with PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, although he denied any intent to shift alliances.
Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski of the Left described the coalition as “on the brink of collapse,” citing growing uncertainty and mistrust.
Despite surviving a parliamentary confidence vote in early June, the coalition remains divided on key issues including abortion rights, same-sex marriage, and migration policy.
Kaczynski, meanwhile, has said PiS is focused on returning to power in the 2027 general elections.
Tusk emphasized he is taking Holownia’s explanations seriously and plans to chart a unified path forward as the coalition faces its most turbulent phase since taking office in late 2023.
