SANA’A, April 20, A series of U.S. airstrikes on Sunday evening targeted a busy market in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, killing at least 12 people and injuring 30 others, according to health officials in the Houthi-controlled region. The attack occurred at the Farwah market in the Shu’ub neighborhood, one of the busiest commercial areas in the city.
Rescue teams are still conducting search operations, looking for survivors beneath the rubble. The airstrikes were part of a broader wave of U.S. attacks on multiple locations in Sanaa on the same day, escalating tensions between the Houthis and the U.S. military.
This incident comes just days after another deadly U.S. strike on the Ras Isa fuel port in western Yemen late Thursday. That attack killed 80 people, injured 170 others, and caused extensive damage to fuel storage facilities, which led to fuel spills in the Red Sea.
The recent escalation follows U.S. airstrikes that resumed on March 15 to target Houthi military sites, aiming to prevent the group from threatening U.S. warships and Israeli interests in the Red Sea. The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen, have stated that their attacks are in retaliation for U.S. and Israeli actions against Gaza. They have called for a halt to the offensive against the Gaza Strip and demand the entry of humanitarian aid into the Palestinian region
