LONDON/FRANKFURT, February 24 — The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a warning to travelers in Mexico, advising vigilance and adherence to local security guidance amid disruptions in several states.
“If you are currently in Jalisco, minimise movements and follow any local shelter in place instructions,” the FCDO said. Authorities in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara have advised residents and visitors to stay indoors, with certain transport services suspended. The advisory comes amid security incidents affecting access to transport and public services.
The US Embassy in Mexico similarly advised citizens in parts of Jalisco and Nayarit, including Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and Ciudad Guzman, to shelter in place. Other areas, including Baja California, Quintana Roo, Oaxaca, and Puebla, have returned to normal conditions.
Jalisco’s capital, Guadalajara, is scheduled to host four FIFA World Cup matches later this year, while Puerto Vallarta is a popular resort destination.
International flights to Puerto Vallarta Airport were cancelled on February 22, with further cancellations or rescheduling reported on February 23. Both Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara Airports remain open under the protection of Mexico’s National Guard and Ministry of Defense, according to official statements. Social media claims of airport takeovers were debunked, though clips showed panicked passengers.
Airlines including American Airlines, United, Delta, and Air Canada have waived change fees or resumed flights, with Puerto Vallarta flights resuming February 24 and Guadalajara flights on February 25.
The FCDO reiterated that travelers across Mexico should stay alert, follow local instructions, and monitor updates from authorities and airlines.
