KYIV, July 29 — US President Donald Trump has renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire to end the war in Ukraine. Both Kyiv and Moscow have responded cautiously, even as Russian airstrikes continue to take lives on the ground.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that overnight, Russia launched 37 drones and two missiles targeting multiple regions. While 32 drones were intercepted, five drones and two missiles hit their targets, causing significant destruction in three locations.
The deadliest strike occurred in Ukraine’s southern Zaporizhzhia region, where a Russian air attack on a correctional facility killed at least 17 people and injured 42, according to the Ministry of Justice.
Presidential Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak condemned the attack as a clear war crime. “The Russians will not stop unless they are stopped,” he said on social media.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that 22 people died in Russian strikes over the past 24 hours. In a Telegram message, he criticized Moscow for continuing attacks despite ceasefire efforts. “Every strike, every death shows why Russia deserves firm, effective, and fair sanctions pressure,” Zelenskyy said.
While Ukrainian officials welcomed Trump’s renewed ceasefire proposal as a sign of diplomatic interest, they stressed that any peace deal must guarantee Ukraine’s full sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Kremlin has not formally responded to Trump’s latest call. However, previous Russian statements indicate they demand that negotiations recognize the current battlefield realities.
With no breakthrough yet, Ukraine continues to face daily air attacks and calls for stronger international defense aid and diplomatic pressure.
