Ukraine launched its largest drone attack on Moscow since the war began, targeting key infrastructure, including an oil refinery. Russian officials reported shooting down 91 drones near the capital and over 240 across the country. The assault occurred just before Kyiv and U.S. officials met in Saudi Arabia to discuss potential ceasefire measures.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed the attack was the most significant on the city, with three deaths, 18 injuries, and disruptions at four airports. Damage was also reported near Domodedovo Airport. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov acknowledged the attack, praising Russian air defenses but warning of continued threats.
Ukraine, backed by European nations including France, has proposed a mutual air truce, halting long-range strikes if Russia agrees. Ukrainian officials planned to present the proposal during talks in Jeddah. Meanwhile, Kyiv has intensified strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, aiming to pressure Moscow into negotiations.
Russia has also escalated attacks, launching 126 drones and a ballistic missile overnight. Explosions were reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa, killing one person and injuring 17 others. The Russian military claims to have retaken over 35 square miles in Ukraine’s Kursk region, though this remains unverified.
President Volodymyr Zelensky announced plans to produce 30,000 long-range drones and 3,000 missiles this year, strengthening Ukraine’s defense. As both sides sustain heavy losses, the latest escalation underscores the challenges in reaching a diplomatic resolution.
