MOSCOW, Feb. 16 – Russia’s Bryansk region experienced what local authorities described as the largest Ukrainian drone attack since the start of the conflict, damaging energy infrastructure and disrupting essential services, regional governor Alexander Bogomaz said Monday.
According to the governor, the aerial assault lasted more than 12 hours, from the morning of Feb. 15 until about 8:00 p.m. local time. Russian air defences intercepted and destroyed more than 170 fixed-wing drones during the attack, with a total of 229 drones reportedly downed in the region within 24 hours, highlighting the scale and intensity of the operation.
The strikes damaged several power supply facilities, temporarily cutting electricity and heating across five municipal districts and parts of Bryansk city. Emergency crews restored services within about three hours by repairing infrastructure and activating backup systems, officials said, minimizing prolonged disruption to residents during winter conditions.
Drone activity was also reported in other western Russian regions between Feb. 15 and 16. In Belgorod, authorities detected 88 drones in 24 hours, of which 51 were shot down. Attacks there damaged residential buildings, commercial and public facilities, as well as energy infrastructure, with at least one person reported injured, according to local officials.
Meanwhile, regional authorities in Kursk and Kaluga said air defences destroyed 25 and 14 drones respectively over the same period.
There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian officials regarding the reported strikes.
