UNITED NATIONS — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday called on members of the Security Council, particularly its permanent members, to overcome deep divisions and renew their commitment to global peace through dialogue and diplomacy.
Speaking at an open debate on multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of disputes, Guterres urged Council members to revive the cooperative spirit that once enabled the body to prevent large-scale conflict, even during the Cold War.
“Even in the darkest days, this Council managed to uphold collective decision-making, deploy peacekeeping missions, facilitate humanitarian aid, and help prevent a third world war,” he said. “I urge you to keep channels open, listen in good faith, and work to build consensus.”
Guterres also emphasized the urgent need to reform the Security Council to reflect current geopolitical realities. “The Council must represent the world of today, not that of 80 years ago,” he said, advocating for broader representation and inclusivity.
The Secretary-General underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation with regional and subregional partners and called on all UN member states to uphold their obligations under the UN Charter, international human rights law, and international humanitarian law.
Marking 80 years since the founding of the United Nations, Guterres reiterated the organization’s core mission: to protect humanity from war and resolve disputes peacefully. “As we commemorate the UN Charter, we must recommit to the multilateral spirit of peace through diplomacy,” he concluded.
