New York, March 19 (QNA) – The United Nations expressed its concern over Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, marking the first major military action in the region since the ceasefire agreement two months ago.

Acting Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide Virginia Gamba, and Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on the Responsibility to Protect Mo Bleeker emphasized that these developments signal a worrying and dramatic escalation of violence with irreversible consequences. They stressed the urgent need to prioritize shared imperatives for a peace process incorporating prevention and protection aspects.

In a Wednesday statement, the UN officials conveyed their deep concern about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, exacerbated by the Israeli authorities’ decision to suspend the entry of aid into the region. They noted that this measure has been widely condemned by various multilateral humanitarian organizations, the UN, and several member states, warning that further delays in humanitarian aid delivery threaten increased hunger and suffering among Gaza’s civilian population.

In line with the frameworks for the prevention of genocide and the responsibility to protect, the officials urged all parties to prioritize civilian protection, take immediate steps to de-escalate tensions, prevent further loss of life, and engage in a robust political solution. They also called for adherence to the ceasefire agreement and the restoration of unhindered access to humanitarian aid.

Israeli forces resumed their aggression on Gaza early on Tuesday, after a two-month cessation under a ceasefire agreement implemented on January 19. However, they violated its terms and continued bombarding various areas in Gaza, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries.
