UN Launches Political Forum on Sustainable Development

New York, July 14 (QNA) – The 2025 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development opened Monday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, bringing together ministers, officials, experts, and civil society actors from around the world. The forum runs through July 23 under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
Participants are discussing strategies to accelerate progress toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development goals, amid growing global challenges and a narrowing window for implementation. The financial gap to meet the SDGs remains significant, with estimates from the recent Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, Spain, placing it at nearly USD 4 trillion annually. This underscores the urgent need for expanded global investment and financial reforms.
The 2025 forum is themed “Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs for leaving no one behind.” Discussions focus on specific goals, including good health and well-being, decent work and economic growth, and life below water. A key focus is also on Goal 17 partnerships for the goals which is reviewed annually to support implementation through improved financing.
Voluntary national reviews remain central to the forum, allowing member states to present self-assessments of their progress, share successes and challenges, and promote accountability and transparency. Dozens of countries are expected to submit reports.
The forum also features wide participation from NGOs, youth groups, local authorities, academia, indigenous peoples, private companies, and UN agencies, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the 2030 Agenda.
Side events, exhibitions, and panel discussions are part of the program, aimed at enhancing cooperation and sharing practical, evidence-based solutions. The outcomes of this forum will help shape preparations for the 2027 SDG Summit, marking a key milestone in the final push toward the 2030 goals.
