The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has once again accused Israeli authorities of using starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza, where over one million children face life-threatening hunger.
In a statement published on X, UNRWA said that Israeli forces are deliberately starving civilians in Gaza, including one million children. The agency renewed its urgent call to lift the blockade and allow the entry of food and medical supplies, stating clearly, “Lift the siege, allow UNRWA to bring in food and medicines.”
Since March 2, Israel has enforced a total siege on Gaza. Despite international legal obligations to protect civilians and allow humanitarian access, aid convoys have been bombed, crossings blocked, and distribution points targeted. These actions have drawn international condemnation and have been described as collective punishment and potential war crimes.
Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that dozens of children have died from starvation and dehydration, with hundreds of thousands more at serious risk as food insecurity deepens and the health system collapses.
On Saturday alone, at least 136 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes. Among the victims were 38 people waiting for aid and three children who died from severe malnutrition.
Since October 2023, nearly 59,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, the majority being women and children. The ongoing attacks have devastated the enclave, crippled healthcare services, and created conditions resembling famine.
UNRWA has called on the international community to act swiftly to ensure unimpeded humanitarian access and prevent further civilian suffering.
