UNITED NATIONS, April 7 – The United Nations Security Council failed to adopt a draft resolution aimed at enhancing maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz after divisions among major powers blocked its passage.
The resolution, encouraging coordinated defensive measures including escorting commercial vessels, secured 11 votes in favor. However, China and Russia voted against it, while Pakistan and Colombia abstained.
Proposed by Bahrain with Gulf Cooperation Council members and Jordan, the draft sought to ensure safe navigation in a key global energy route.
China’s envoy Fu Cong said the text failed to address root causes and lacked balance, warning against rushed decisions. Russia’s Vassily Nebenzia criticized it for portraying Iran as solely responsible while ignoring actions by the United States and Israel, calling it unbalanced.
Iran’s envoy Amir Saeid Iravani rejected the proposal, saying it targeted Iran unfairly and could justify further actions by its adversaries. He thanked China and Russia for vetoing the draft and acknowledged the abstentions by Pakistan and Colombia.
The failure to adopt the resolution reflects deep divisions within the Council, raising concerns over maritime security and regional stability.
