Washington, May 14 (QNA) – Regional Spokesperson for the US Department of State, Michael Mitchell, stated that President Donald Trump’s visit to Qatar highlights the strength of US-Qatar ties and reflects Washington’s commitment to enhancing diplomatic, security, and economic cooperation in the Gulf.
In an exclusive interview with Qatar News Agency (QNA), Mitchell emphasized that US-Qatar relations have seen substantial development, positioning Qatar as a major non-NATO ally and a key player in regional mediation and humanitarian efforts. He pointed out that Qatar’s strategic importance has grown in recent years, particularly in conflict mediation and regional stability initiatives.
He explained that the visit comes amid global security, humanitarian, and economic challenges, with Qatar at the center of US cooperation efforts in the region. Discussions during the visit are set to address regional security, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, energy security, and economic investments. Mitchell highlighted that US-Qatar security cooperation has reached advanced levels, while economic and educational ties continue to expand through collaborative projects and strategic investments.
On potential new agreements, Mitchell mentioned that the visit opens opportunities for deeper collaboration in energy, security, education, and technology. He said that both nations are exploring joint investment opportunities and long-term partnerships aimed at enhancing mutual growth and regional stability, even though no specific agreements have been announced yet. He noted that the US values the deep economic integration with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, with Qatar being a leading partner.
Mitchell further noted Qatar’s significant role in addressing humanitarian issues in Gaza, supporting aid delivery, and contributing to ceasefire efforts, which the US greatly values. He added that Qatar’s diplomatic initiatives have been instrumental in easing tensions and providing critical support to conflict-affected areas.
Concluding his remarks, Mitchell said President Trump’s visit reaffirms the United States’ commitment to regional stability and prosperity, with Gulf Cooperation Council-US relations remaining vital for security and development. He expressed optimism that the visit would pave the way for stronger defense ties, broader economic engagements, and enhanced strategic cooperation that benefit both nations and the wider region.
