New York, April 7 – The United States has warned Iran that any move to block the Strait of Hormuz could carry serious consequences, describing it as a potentially decisive escalation.
Addressing the United Nations Security Council, US envoy Mike Waltz sharply criticized China and Russia for vetoing a draft resolution aimed at ensuring safe navigation through the key global shipping route. He termed the veto a “new low,” accusing both nations of siding with Tehran.
The resolution, backed by multiple members, called for coordinated measures to protect commercial vessels and maintain the free flow of trade through the waterway. Despite receiving majority support, it failed to pass due to the vetoes, with a few countries abstaining.
Waltz warned that any disruption in the Strait could impact global energy supplies and hinder humanitarian aid deliveries to vulnerable regions, stressing that the consequences would extend beyond the Middle East.
He also raised concerns over deepening ties between Iran, China, and Russia, citing growing military and economic cooperation.
Despite heightened tensions, Washington reiterated its willingness to pursue diplomacy while remaining committed to safeguarding international navigation and regional stability.
