Uzbekistan has been unanimously elected to the United Nations Statistical Commission for the 2026–2029 term marking the country’s first-ever membership in the body. The elections were held in New York.
Established in 1947 as a functional body of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Statistical Commission is the primary intergovernmental organization responsible for setting strategic directions in the development of international statistics. It also coordinates the formulation and implementation of universal statistical standards and methodological principles. The Commission comprises 24 member states, elected for a four-year term with due regard to geographic representation.
Uzbekistan’s election to the Commission reflects growing international recognition of the wide-ranging reforms undertaken under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and the country’s increasing role in global affairs.
Full membership in the Statistical Commission provides Uzbekistan with significant opportunities to help shape global statistical policy, share its national reform experience, learn from international best practices, and enhance global cooperation in the statistical field.
