TASHKENT, January 5. /Dunyo IA/– Batir Tursunov, an accomplished diplomat from Uzbekistan, officially assumed the role of Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on January 1, according to Dunyo IA.
Tursunov, 50, holds degrees from the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies and the Institute of Philosophy and Law of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.
Since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2005, he has held key positions, including roles at the central office and Uzbekistan’s Embassy in Beijing. Tursunov also served as Director of the Institute for Strategic and Regional Studies and Deputy Director of the International Institute for Central Asia.
In 2023–2024, he served as Minister-Counsellor at Uzbekistan’s Embassy in China and represented the country at the SCO Secretariat.
A Ph.D. in Philosophy and the author of over 25 scholarly works, Tursunov is fluent in Russian, English, and Chinese. His appointment underscores Uzbekistan’s growing influence in regional diplomacy.
