Doha, November 6 (QNA) – HE Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, affirmed that every major crisis confronting the world today — from climate change and conflict to poverty — is deeply intertwined with violence against women and girls.
Speaking at a press conference during the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, Her Excellency unveiled the report “Beyond Progress: Consolidating Gains to End Violence against Women and Girls,” prepared under the Spotlight Initiative, a global partnership of the UN and the European Union.
Her Excellency underscored that achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and fulfilling the Doha Declaration depend on ensuring the full participation of women and girls. She stressed that the Spotlight Initiative plays a vital role in advancing this vision by strengthening legal protections, empowering women, and supporting governments in adopting gender-sensitive laws, policies, and institutions.
According to HE Amina Mohammed, the initiative’s first phase has achieved exceptional results across more than 25 countries, with over 540 laws and policies adopted or reinforced to safeguard women’s rights. The program has engaged 8 million young people in promoting gender equality, reached 380 million people through awareness campaigns, and helped double conviction rates for gender-based violence in 13 countries.
She added that the initiative is expected to prevent violence against 21 million women and girls by the end of this year, emphasizing that progress must continue as millions still live in fear.
Concluding her remarks, HE Amina Mohammed called for stronger partnerships and regional efforts, particularly across Africa, to build on the achievements of the Spotlight Initiative and accelerate the global movement to end violence against women and girls.
