TIANJIN, Sept. 1 – Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to play a stronger role in protecting peace and stability amid rising global uncertainties and complex international challenges.
Speaking at a welcome banquet for visiting leaders at the SCO Summit in Tianjin, Xi said the world is undergoing rapid changes, with unpredictable events increasing in frequency and impact. He urged SCO members to work together to maintain regional security, promote economic growth, and support developing nations.
Xi highlighted China’s position as a stable and reliable partner, committed to fostering cooperation, mutual trust, and shared development among member states. He described the SCO as an important force in building a fairer international order, strengthening dialogue, and advancing the long-term interests of its countries.
Founded in 2001, the SCO has grown into a major regional organization with 10 full members, plus observer states and dialogue partners, representing nearly half of the world’s population and a quarter of the global economy.
Leaders at the Tianjin summit are expected to adopt strategic plans for long-term cooperation, discuss economic, security, and cultural initiatives, and explore ways to improve global governance. Xi said the organization will continue to promote unity, peace, and progress across the region and beyond, while serving as a platform for collective problem-solving in today’s fast-changing world.
