At the Munich Security Conference, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the creation of an “army of Europe” to ensure the continent’s security in the face of Russian aggression. His statement came as he expressed concerns over the shifting dynamics of European-American relations, particularly after US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed peace talks without Ukraine’s involvement.
Zelensky emphasized the necessity for Europe to strengthen its defense capabilities, given that the US may no longer offer the same level of support. He highlighted the remarks made by US Vice President JD Vance, who acknowledged the end of the traditional US-Europe relationship and urged Europe to “step up” its defense initiatives.
“The time has come,” said Zelensky, “the armed forces of Europe must be created.” He pointed out that the possibility of America rejecting Europe’s defense needs could become a reality, making a European military force essential for the continent’s security.
Zelensky’s call echoed previous proposals by French President Emmanuel Macron for a self-sufficient European military. He further criticized the lack of a unified approach among European leaders, warning that Russia might seek to bypass Europe entirely in future negotiations.
As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine approaches its three-year anniversary, Zelensky remains firm on Ukraine’s potential NATO membership, despite the US indicating that such a move might not be realistic. Tensions continue to rise as discussions around peace talks and Ukraine’s role on the global stage remain uncertain.
