KYIV, Sept. 7, 2025 — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned Russia’s latest barrage of strikes on Sunday after Ukraine’s main government building in Kyiv was hit for the first time since the war began, leaving parts of the cabinet of ministers building damaged and fires on its upper floors.
At least four people were killed nationwide, including a baby and a young woman in Kyiv’s Svyatoshynsky district, where a nine-storey residential building was struck. Dozens more were injured in attacks across Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, Odesa, Sumy and Chernihiv.
Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched more than 800 drones and missiles overnight, the largest strike of the war so far. Nine missiles and 56 drones hit 37 targets, while wreckage from downed weapons caused further damage in multiple locations.
Zelensky called the strikes “deliberate crimes” aimed at prolonging the conflict, urging the international community to show political will to stop the attacks. He stressed that Russia’s actions undermine any claims of readiness for peace.
Russia’s defence ministry said its forces targeted Ukraine’s military-industrial sites and transport hubs, claiming damage to weapons depots. In contrast, Kyiv officials reported widespread harm to residential areas and civilian infrastructure.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the assault, saying President Vladimir Putin “believes he can act with impunity.” French President Emmanuel Macron announced that 26 allied nations had pledged to deploy forces to Ukraine “by land, sea or air” once a ceasefire takes effect, while Putin warned any such deployments would be “legitimate targets.”
The unprecedented strike on a central government building, heavily guarded since the start of Russia’s invasion in February 2022, has rattled Ukrainians and underscored the escalating intensity of Moscow’s campaign. Russia currently controls around 20 percent of Ukraine’s territory, including Crimea, annexed in 2014.
