WASHINGTON, Sept. 23: Chinese President Xi Jinping left Beijing on Wednesday for a state visit to the United States, where he is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump for talks on bilateral relations and economic and strategic issues.
Xi is traveling with his wife, Peng Liyuan, and senior Chinese officials, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency.
He is expected to be received by Trump at Joint Base Andrews near Washington upon arrival. Xi’s delegation includes Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and director of its General Office, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Trump and first lady Melania Trump are scheduled to formally welcome Xi and Peng at the White House on Thursday, followed by a state arrival ceremony and talks between the two presidents.
The visit is Xi’s first state visit to the US in more than a decade.
The leaders are expected to discuss bilateral relations and economic and strategic matters.
Xi’s visit follows Trump’s trip to China in May, when the two sides discussed trade, investment and broader bilateral relations. Xi’s visit is scheduled to continue through Friday.
