TAIZ, Sept. 17 — Yemeni government forces carried out fresh airstrikes on Houthi positions in southwestern Taiz province Thursday as fighting intensified across western Taiz and neighboring Lahj province, according to a government official.
Fayyad Alnoman, assistant undersecretary at Yemen’s Information Ministry for television affairs, said on X that local sources reported an airstrike targeting Houthi reinforcements at Al-Dharifah junction in Al-Wazi’iyah district, west of Taiz.
A separate Yemeni air force strike targeted a Houthi communications center in Al-Hawban, east of Taiz city, according to field reports.
Alnoman said field sources reported continued heavy fighting across the Kahbub mountain range between Lahj and Taiz. The strategically important range overlooks routes toward Yemen’s western coast, Bab el-Mandeb and Dhubab.
Government forces reportedly seized several highlands and launched a counteroffensive toward Houthi-held positions.
The Houthis have not immediately commented on the reports.
Fighting between government forces and the Houthis has intensified since early July, following a period of relative calm that followed a UN-brokered truce in April 2022.
