Beijing Urges Washington To Lift Iran Sanctions On Chinese Firms

BEIJING, Sept. 3 — China on Thursday urged the United States to lift Iran-related sanctions on Chinese companies and nationals, calling them unjustified unilateral actions.
Commerce Ministry spokesperson Huang Ling said Beijing opposes sanctions lacking a basis in international law or authorization from the UN Security Council.
Huang said Washington imposed sanctions on Chinese companies and citizens over alleged Iran-related ties despite repeated Chinese representations, expressing Beijing’s “strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition.”
She said the measures interfere with normal trade and economic exchanges and disrupt global energy security and stable supplies.
China urged the US to “immediately correct its erroneous practices and lift sanctions against relevant Chinese companies and citizens,” Huang said, adding that Beijing would safeguard their legitimate rights and interests.
The US announced sanctions in July against six individuals and entities in four countries, including China, over alleged support for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its transport network, Mahan Air.
Washington’s efforts to isolate Tehran financially follow the US-Iran war, which began Feb. 28.
The tensions come as Chinese President Xi Jinping prepares for a reciprocal US visit following President Donald Trump’s trip to Beijing in May.
