CAIRO, May 24 — Fourteen countries on Sunday condemned the opening of a purported “embassy” by Somaliland in occupied Jerusalem, calling the move illegal and unacceptable, according to a joint statement issued by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
Foreign ministers from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Türkiye, Palestine, and Somalia, among others, condemned the step as a violation of international law and UN resolutions. They said it undermines the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem.
The ministers rejected any unilateral measures aimed at altering the status of Jerusalem or granting legitimacy to entities or arrangements that contradict international law and United Nations resolutions.
They reiterated that East Jerusalem has been occupied Palestinian territory since 1967, stressing that any attempts to change its legal or historical status are null and void with no legal effect.
The statement also expressed support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, rejecting actions undermining its national unity or sovereignty.
The ministers emphasized respect for international law and warned against steps that could escalate regional tensions.
In late 2025, Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland, prompting reactions from Somalia and international actors.
