Caracas, August 26 – Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil has voiced strong concern over recent U.S. military deployments in the Caribbean, including the arrival of a nuclear-powered submarine, and called for United Nations intervention to safeguard regional peace.
During a meeting with Gianluca Rampolla, UN Resident Coordinator in Venezuela, Gil warned that these actions pose threats to a region declared a Zone of Peace in 2014 by CELAC and recognized by the UN. “We discussed the threats from the United States facing the region and urged the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to help restore common sense,” Gil said in a Telegram post.
He dismissed U.S. claims that the deployments aim to fight drug trafficking, stressing that Venezuela remains a “territory free of illicit crops.” Reports indicate the USS Lake Erie, a guided missile cruiser, and the USS Newport News, a nuclear-powered fast attack submarine, are expected in the Caribbean next week.
Venezuela has demanded Washington halt its military buildup and guarantee it will not deploy or threaten to use nuclear weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean.
