RAMALLAH, Nov. 13 – Israeli settlers set fire to parts of a mosque northwest of Salfit in the West Bank on Thursday, leaving hateful anti-Islam slogans on its walls, the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s Commission Against the Wall and Settlements reported.
The attackers poured flammable material at the mosque’s entrance, but residents quickly intervened, preventing the fire from engulfing the entire building. The commission noted that the graffiti included slogans hostile to Arabs and Muslims. Israeli authorities have not issued any comment regarding the incident.
The Palestinian Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs condemned the attack as a “heinous crime,” stating that it violates international laws protecting freedom of worship and the sanctity of religious sites. The ministry called on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as well as Arab and Islamic states, to act to halt such assaults.
The attack comes amid a surge in settler violence during the olive harvest season, when Palestinians tend to farmland near settlements. The United Nations recently reported a significant rise in attacks by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, with October marking the highest number of incidents in nearly 20 years.
More than 700,000 Israeli settlers live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Israel occupied the West Bank in 1967 and established settlements considered illegal under international law.
