MIRPUR (AJK), April 28: Azad Jammu and Kashmir Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Liaqat Ali has stated that the general elections in AJK scheduled for 2026 will be held on time, adding that the police have already started preparations to ensure free, fair, and transparent polling.
He made these remarks while speaking to journalists at the Mirpur Range DIG Police Office on Monday afternoon. He was accompanied by Deputy Inspector General Police Mirpur Range Kamran Ali Mughal, SSP Mirpur Khurram Iqbal Mughal, and other senior police officials of the division.
The IGP said that the AJK Police is fully committed to maintaining peace and order across the region, which he noted already exists in a stable form in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized that a peaceful and conducive environment is available for holding the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections in a transparent manner.
Dr. Liaqat Ali said the police will perform their duties impartially in line with the policy framework and requirements of the AJK Election Commission across all ten districts of the region. He reiterated that maintaining law and order during the electoral process remains a top priority. He further added that special monitoring mechanisms, coordination units, and rapid response arrangements are being strengthened to ensure smooth conduct of the electoral process.
Responding to a question regarding increasing misuse of social media, the IGP said the government would be approached with proposals for the establishment of a Social Media Regulatory Authority in AJK. He directed SSP Mirpur Khurram Iqbal to prepare a draft proposal for onward submission to the government. He said such a mechanism is necessary to curb misinformation and maintain public order during sensitive times.
Later, a delegation of senior journalists led by KPC President Syed Abid Hussain Shah met the IGP and discussed issues of mutual interest, including improved coordination between police and media for timely public information regarding police activities. The IGP appreciated the role of the media in highlighting public issues responsibly and assured continued cooperation.
