ASEAN foreign ministers have called on Thailand and Cambodia to show maximum restraint and take immediate steps to end hostilities, following a special regional meeting held in Kuala Lumpur.
According to a statement from Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry, the Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting urged both sides to restore mutual trust and return to dialogue through peaceful diplomatic means, including bilateral mechanisms.
The ministers welcomed discussions on resuming a ceasefire and halting military actions along the border. They noted that the ASEAN General Border Committee will meet on December 24 to discuss implementation and verification of the ceasefire.
ASEAN stressed the importance of maintaining regional peace and stability and encouraged both countries to use existing communication channels to avoid further escalation. The bloc reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peaceful solutions and constructive engagement.
The special meeting was convened as part of ASEAN’s efforts to reduce tensions between Thailand and Cambodia and promote dialogue, cooperation, and long-term regional stability.
