CANBERRA, Aug. 9 — Australia is strengthening national preparedness and coordination as authorities continue responding to risks from bushfires, floods, storms and other severe weather events.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said strong coordination between the Australian Government, state and territory authorities and local communities remains essential to preparing for and responding to major emergencies.
NEMA has supported national planning, coordinated response activities and worked with state and territory agencies during recent severe weather events. It has also reviewed lessons from the 2025-26 higher-risk weather season to strengthen preparedness for future emergencies.
The Bureau of Meteorology provides forecasts and warnings to emergency services and communities to help Australians prepare for hazardous conditions.
Authorities are encouraging residents to stay informed through official warnings, maintain emergency plans and follow directions from local emergency services during severe weather.
The Australian Government has also allocated funding for national preparedness initiatives, including the AusAlert emergency messaging system and increased aerial firefighting capabilities.
Officials said continued cooperation and investment in preparedness would help communities better manage the impacts of future natural disasters.
