BRASILIA/BUENOS AIRES: Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Argentina have deteriorated after Brazil downgraded ties to the charge d’affaires level following repeated critical remarks by Argentine President Javier Milei against Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Brazil recalled its ambassador to Argentina in late July after Milei described Lula as “corrupt” and a “criminal” during separate public appearances. While Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira ruled out further diplomatic measures, Argentina expressed regret over Brazil’s decision, calling it politically motivated.
At the same time, relations between Brazil and the United States have also become strained following a dispute over diplomatic visas. President Lula criticised Washington’s decision to revoke the visa of Brazil’s ambassador to the United States, describing the move as irresponsible and calling for mutual respect in bilateral relations.
Lula also announced that Brazil would not receive new ambassadors before the country’s general elections scheduled for October 4, stressing that Brazil would not accept foreign interference in its electoral process.
The election is expected to have significant political implications for Latin America, with Lula seeking another presidential term amid growing regional ideological divisions
