Ottawa, Monday — Canada has announced new sanctions against Russia in response to alleged violations involving Ukrainian children during the ongoing war.
At the High-Level Meeting of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children in Brussels, Belgium, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirmed additional restrictive measures under the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations.
According to Global Affairs Canada, thousands of Ukrainian children have allegedly been illegally deported or forcibly transferred, and subjected to “indoctrination and militarization” by Russian authorities in Russia and in temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories.
The government described these actions as unacceptable, stating that they represent a serious breach of international humanitarian law and a major violation of human rights.
Canada further announced sanctions against 23 individuals and five entities allegedly involved in these activities targeting Ukrainian children.
With the latest measures, Canada has now sanctioned more than 80 individuals and entities linked to alleged abuses against Ukrainian minors.
Ottawa also reiterated its demand for Moscow to immediately return Ukrainian children to their families and communities, stressing the importance of protecting children’s rights amid the ongoing conflict.
