SASKATOON: The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) has strongly criticized an incident at a Saskatoon high school graduation ceremony in which a staff member allegedly removed a Palestinian keffiyeh scarf from a graduating student, calling it part of a wider pattern of anti-Palestinian racism.
In a statement shared on social media, the NCCM said it was “extremely disturbing” to witness the incident at Centennial Collegiate, where a student appeared to have her keffiyeh scarf removed during the ceremony. The group said it had circulated video footage of the moment and raised concerns about how Palestinian cultural symbols are being treated in public institutions.
The organization stated that it has seen increasing cases of anti-Palestinian racism in recent years, particularly in educational environments and graduation ceremonies, where expressions of Palestinian identity are sometimes misinterpreted or associated with violence.
The NCCM said it is currently in contact with relevant parties regarding the incident and emphasized that such actions must be addressed and accountability ensured across Canadian institutions. It added that the matter reflects a broader issue requiring serious attention from authorities and educational bodies.
The council said it will provide further updates as more information becomes available. Centennial Collegiate has not yet issued a public response regarding the incident.
