The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has denied Iranian claims that its naval forces fired warning shots at American warships in the Gulf of Oman and forced them to retreat toward the Indian Ocean.
In a statement issued Friday on social media platform X, CENTCOM described Iran’s account as “false,” stating that no attack or warning fire was directed at US Navy vessels in regional waters.
“Iranian forces did not attack or fire at US Navy warships,” CENTCOM said, adding that any such action would constitute a serious violation of the ceasefire. The command also stressed that US forces continue to operate freely in the region while carrying out their missions.
The response came after the Iranian Army claimed earlier that its Navy had launched warning actions involving missiles and drones against two US destroyers in the Sea of Oman. Tehran alleged the move forced the vessels to withdraw.
According to the Iranian statement, the operation was conducted in response to what it called US maritime harassment and the seizure of Iranian commercial and oil tankers. Iranian officials said Qadir missiles and Shahed Danesh drones were used.
The conflicting statements highlight continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran in strategically important regional waters.
